Evaluation Q4

Q4 part 2

Final Cut
We used this for every individual part of our music video. When looking at all of our clips final cut allowed us to view them in a larger form rather than just looking at them on the digital camera screen. It allowed us to view the timeline of our video and what clips were where and if we needed to insert something into a certain part. We used many different effects on top of our clips such as the colour correcter to turn some of our shots to black and white and to brighten the colours on some of the shots. We enhanced the contrast on some of the clips that we kept in colour in order to exaggerate the fact that Tommy is slowly returning to the person that he used to be. Also, when we changed the shots to black and white we enhanced the whites and blacks for the clip, however sometimes the whites were too high so we would have to keep playing around with the keys untill we got the colours right. We made the colours bolder as they contrast really well with each other and they also keep a similar theme as the Digi-Pak. When we enhanced the colours on some shots we played around with the brightness and contrast moving the bar up and down untill we found when the brightness felt right for the clip. We used many clip transitions on our clips such as cross dissolve and fade ins and fade outs and motion blur. We wanted to use these transitions so the clips would keep a fluent movement from one to the other. We made our animation on Final Cut by importing the pictures that we had scanned in to Photoshop. We had to insert them all into a sequence in the order we wanted them on the screen so we had to make sure that all of the body parts were onto of the background picture. We had to move all of the body parts seperatly and make key points for where we wanted the body parts to move and where we wanted them to move to. We also made our stock animation on Final Cut of the words 'I love you', we did this by importing pictures of Tommy, each adding another letter to spell the words and eventually, speeding up the duration.

New media in our society
Nowadays in our society we rely on the media a lot more than what we used to. We will use the internet to look at music video on websites such as youtube rather than watching them on TV. We will use Facebook, Twitter, Myspace to see what people are up to and also the celebrities that we want to follow. With iPads and tablet devices being made we can download apps to be able to keep up with the new technologies being made everyday. We can access the internet from our mobile phones now so we do not have to have a laptop or computer to be able to access this from. This is more convenient for the younger generation due to them having access to hardware such as smart phones and tablet devices. Many contemporary artists were launched through social networking sites, such as myspace with their videos being put up on youtube. An artist that is an example of this is Justin Bieber with him being found by his videos on youtube.

Con's

  • Spend more time with lead singer

  • Better lip singing

  • More locations

  • Animation doesn't totally fit in

  • More various shots - close ups of Tommy

  • Use filters

  • Better contrast

If we were to make another music video i think we would make sure we give ourselves enough time to be able to do a lot more filming in different locations as this was said in our audience feedback. I would have spent more time perfecting the animation and making it look a lot more professional and making a lot more of it.

There were many personal problems that we had during the production such as there only being one computer that had all of the clips and the music video on so normally only 1 or 2 of us would be able to do this in the lesson. This would hinder our music video as some of us may have different opinions on what we would have wanted to put in the video and where we would want to put it.

We have learnt that we need to make sure that we try many more effects on our video and use different filters to see how they can make our video look a lot better. We have learnt that we need to spend more time with the lead singer to make sure that we get enough good shots to be able to put into our video so we can choose the best ones.

We have learnt a lot from our feedback that was given to us through our focus group and we will take all of the comments on board for the future.

Evaluation Q2

How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary text?

We wanted to make sure that we had a consistent house style through out our music video and digi-pak/digi-pak advert so that the audience were able to recognise the band.

We did this by making sure we used dark colours throughout everything such as making the digi-pak black with a few bright colours running through it. We did this also on the digi-pak advert so that the audience will be able to notice that this is for the same band. We also used black and white running through our video so that the audience will be able to decode this.

We also encoded all of our media text with bright colours running through them so that there could be a large contrast between the bright and dark colours. This is shown on our digi-pak and digi-pak advert with the splash's of yellow and white running through it. We also show this in our music video as there are a lot of bright scene's throughout the video. We have used pictures of the band on our digi-pak and digi-pak advert but haven't really shown a lot of identity but the audience will be able to know who they are from there music. We used a consistent font throughout all of the digi-pak and digi-pak advert so that we can make sure we have a good band identity. We wanted to make sure that the band name and the name of the album fitted well to our band and the way the digi-pak looked. We feel it all fits together and goes well together. We have created mystery to what the lead singers look like on the digi-pak advert as there are no pictures of them.

We feel that our digi-pak creates a great band identity to what we wanted it to look like as it follows other digi-pak conventions as they do not show their identity as they are more focused on the music than they are about being a 'star'.

We feel that our digi-pak advert is a good way of showing band identity with the colours matching the digi-pak and having the same identity. We feel it creates mystery as you cannot see what the lead singers look like so the audience will have to buy the digi-pak or go on the Facebook site to be able to se this. The signatures on the advert are represented as some kind of autograph that the buyers and viewers are getting and will make the audience feel special as they may feel not everyone has this.

Evaluation Q1

Question 1 -In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and
conventions of real media products?

In our music video we have used, developed and challenged forms and conventions of real media products. We wanted to use You Me At Six - fireworks for our music video as we wanted a song that hadn't had a video so we could create a story line that didn't have to compete with a professionally made video and story line.

We followed many conventions through out our video. We made Tommy the lead singer of the band and the lead role of the story line so that we could relate to Goodwins theory with there having to be many close up shotsof the lead singer as he will be the icon of the band.

We used many different shots that showed continuity and montage editing within our video. We have used continuity editing with the shots of the relationship scene of Tommy and Louise as this is a story that is carrying on throughout the whole video. We used montage editing when we showed different shots of Tommy as we used many cross cuts between the scene's.

We used the convention of when seeing a scene in a music video in black and white it shows that past, as when Louise and Tommy are happy together we have put most of them all into black and white to show how they used to be happylike her and her knew man are. This is also shown in the Aloe Blacc - I need a dollar video where he is in black and white showing the past.

After the beginning of the the video, many of the shots are not much longer than 5 seconds long as we used fast paced editing this is so that we can keep the audience intrigued and incised to want to watch more and to see what else is going to happen. Many of our shots will have different editing put on to them from a cross dissolve to a colour corrector effect on top. This is to make the video look more professional and bring the shots colour in the shots out.

We encoded the text with a love story between 3 people, this showed a a love triangle between Louise cheating on Tommy with Mike. This broke many conventions that many people seem to think, as a main convention of relationships is that themale figure is the one who cheats however we show the female figure cheating. The challenges the Laura Mulveys theory also as she says how the female is just seen as a figure as never in power however we show the female being very much in power.

We made sure that we followed the mise en scene for the genre of indie/rock. We made sure that the clothing that the band and the lead singer wore dark indie clothing and we wanted all of our band had long hair as this is a genre signifier for indie/rock. Wewanted to make sure that the audience would be able to decode our text and be able to know the genre we are coming from. Many of our locations are in many indie music video's such as a garage or a set where the band will set up their band equipment andsing as a band.

With our animation we wanted to make sure it would fit into our music video and give it that slight edge that no one else had. However animation is not a general convention that is usually seen in the genre of indie/rock but we wanted to have something in our video that attracted a wider audience and we feel that the animation does this.

I learnt that there were many conventions that music video's follow that i didn't know. Here are screen shots of the conventions that we have used and not used in our digi-pak and digi-pak advert. Here are the conventions of the digi-pak advert:

Here are the conventions of the digi-pak:
